Our client is a deep-tech startup developing proprietary bioelectrochemical technology to significantly boost biomethane production within existing anaerobic digestion infrastructure. By retrofitting rather than replacing equipment, the company enables rapid market deployment of its solution. As it scales toward Series A funding, it operates at the cutting edge of a rapidly evolving field, driven by a clear mission: advancing energy justice through sustainable and accessible energy.
Your Responsibilities:
- Contribute to and support the implementation of the scientific strategy guiding the development of the company’s innovative bioelectrochemical technology
- Define, identify, and prioritize key scientific and technical questions related to process performance, scalability, and commercial implementation
- Design and lead research programs in a rapidly evolving field
- Plan, conduct, and interpret experiments focused on electrode-microbe interactions, methane production pathways, and reactor performance
- Translate scientific findings into concrete decisions that accelerate technological development
- Work closely with laboratory and engineering teams to advance the technology
- Maintain a strong focus on scaling up, critically evaluating laboratory results for their applicability in industrial and real-world settings
- May oversee the biological research team, depending on experience
Your profile:
- Demonstrated expertise in applied bioelectrochemistry, including a thorough understanding of electrode-microbe interfaces in mixed-culture environments
- In-depth knowledge of anaerobic digestion microbiology: methanogenic pathways, community dynamics under electrochemical stimulation, and sources of process instability
- Proven ability to design experiments that generate data that can withstand commercial scrutiny
- Strong understanding of scale-up; ability to critically evaluate the transferability of laboratory findings
- Self-directed and decisive in the face of uncertainty, with the ability to set the direction and communicate effectively across disciplines
- Entrepreneurial mindset: you take ownership, think beyond the laboratory, and are motivated by real-world impact
- A strong commitment to the mission of energy justice and sustainable energy systems
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams is a plus
- Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential
- Open to traveling to partner sites across Europe and the UK
What we offer:
- Minimum salary of €105,000 gross per year (full-time, Austrian collective bargaining agreement – Trade, Crafts, and Services); salary may be higher depending on qualifications and experience
- Equity participation: an opportunity to contribute to and share in the company’s long-term success
- Attractive and dynamic employee benefits package
- A key role in bringing cutting-edge technology to life
- A highly entrepreneurial environment where you can make a real difference and be seen
- A lean, high-caliber team where individual contributions have an immediate and visible impact
- Flexible work hours and remote work options
We welcome applications from scientists eager to help shape the future of sustainable energy!
